Neck/Shoulder/Arm Pain
Symptoms of neck, shoulder, and arm pain often vary a great deal from patient to patient. At Schonhard Chiropractic, we have the experience to determine the primary cause of neck pain: whether disc herniation, disc bulge, disc degeneration, or strain or sprain of the muscle of the cervical spine (neck). A disc bulge or disc herniation in the cervical spine (neck) causes spinal nerve irritation leading to intense neck pain or intense arm pain or both. The radiation into the arm or hand are often described as numbness, tingling, pins & needles, or deep throbbing pain.
Cervical disc degeneration also causes nerve irritation in the neck but not with the intensity of a herniated disc. Common complaints of a patient with disc degeneration would be stiffness, grinding in the neck, muscle soreness from the neck into the shoulders. Pain will sharpen in later stages of disc degeneration, so identifying and treating it early are vital to long term correction.
Strained neck muscles come from trauma (falls, auto accidents, whiplash). Strained muscles are most commonly presented to our Jackson, Michigan chiropractic office due to overuse, such as sitting at the computer for hours day after day or sleeping with poor neck support night after night.
As seasoned chiropractors, we will start with a detailed case history, trying to relate past history to current conditions in the neck/shoulder/arm. The next step is a thorough chiropractic exam. This involves a series of tests and procedures to isolate the primary cause of the patient’s condition. As experienced chiropractors, we understand the nervous system and how it relates to the neck pain, shoulder pain, or arm pain. We will focus on the upper back and neck in detail. This is the area of the spine where irritated nerves have potential to refer or radiate into the shoulder or down the arm. After this detailed chiropractic exam, we will have an accurate diagnosis of what is causing the symptoms. X-rays may be necessary to reinforce the diagnosis and gain valuable information into the severity of the condition.
At Schonhard Chiropractic, we will use your history, examination, and x-rays to determine if your case can benefit from chiropractic care. If your case is a chiropractic case, we will use gentle chiropractic adjustments to re-align areas in the neck and upper back. This will decrease symptoms and allow healing to begin.
